“In order to make something simple, you have to know your subject very well indeed”

This is an interesting quote from Edward de Bono. There are many experts in the mining industry that know all about every aspect of maintenance. There are also teams of experts that are formed to develop maintenance processes and to provide governance of the function. If we are to simplify things so that maintainers can get the work done in a more simple and efficient manner then these experts and teams of experts must have input and work with the intent to simplify how things are done.

Since we started using CMMS systems to assist us with maintenance and technology has continued to improve over this time, why has our time spent on the CMMS systems to manage maintenance not been reducing? Why can we not yet plan a job in a fraction of the time that it used to take 5 or 10 years ago?

What can maintenance experts do to make it more simple for people to plan and execute?
